Returning to Elmwood Nursing Home

Doris with her quilt Mary with Doris

Continuing our links with Missioncare and Elmwood Nursing Home in Bickley, we were delighted to visit the residents again on behalf of Beckenham Quilters.

You may remember that Joy Corbett, the Activities Coordinator had started a sewing group following our initial visit a couple of years ago with a donation of lap quilts made by members of Beckenham Quilters. The sewing group have made a couple of quilts now, all hand sewn with the help of Joy and other carers.

Inevitably these have taken a long time to finish, although one now hangs in the residents lounge, so Joy decided that perhaps they could start cushion fronts instead.

Mary Trim and I went to see the results and we were impressed. Several residents now have their own patchworked cushion and showed us these with pride.

During the visit, Mary handed over for a raffle another couple of lap quilts she had made. It was serendipitous that Doris's daughter and son-in-law arrived for a visit just as Mary presented her with the quilt. Smiles all round as these photographs show.

However, an unexpected highlight for us was when a spontaneous sing-song broke out and we all joined in, including some residents that had been quiet up to that point. I even offered the residents a rendition of my 'party piece' which I used to sing a young girl!

Mary and I had a great time and we have offered to go back again before Christmas with any more lap quilts that can be made before then.
