Obituary.
Marie Roberts.
I am sorry to let members know that Marie Roberts, an original member of Beckenham Quilters has died, on
Wednesday 13 July.
Marie had a severe stroke over 30 years ago which put an end to her considerable skills
as a patchwork and quilter. She was proudly Welsh and had been a teacher at the Valley Primary School in Shortlands.
We renewed contact with Marie and her husband of 65 years, Marcel, when they attended our quilt display at
St George's Arts Festival some 4 years ago. Anna Mansi and I began to visit them and we discovered that Marie
had nearly finished a quilt when she had had her stroke. With her permission, Anna finished the quilt and it
was displayed at the BQ Exhibition of 2007.
The joy on Marie's face when she saw it hanging was moving for
everyone who witnessed it.
We send our condolences to Marcel and the family.

Do look in 'About Us' for Polly's account of the Canadian Red Cross Quilt she was
challenged to find on her visit to Australia!
The next meeting is on 3rd August when we will have a Show and Tell and be Open House to local groups.
Our quilts have finished their travels with Grosvenor Exhibitions. They seem to have been on the road
for a long time.
If only they could tell us some of the things they overheard the
visitors saying about them!
For those of you who don't know all the quilts we have been making

WORKSHOP. What's new?
We aim to make small quilts to donate to the Special Care Baby Unit at Farnborough
Hospital (Princess Royal).
Two types of quilts are needed -
1. Predominantly white quilts for stillborn babies which parents can keep as a memento.
These should be wholec1oth quilts in white / tone on tone cotton fabric. They can be
hand or machine quilted in white or pastel thread and any soft lightweight wadding is
acceptable.
Please do not add any embellishments.
Size - 8" x 11" or 10" x 13"
2. Brightly coloured and patterned quilts which can be wholec1oth or pieced in any
design.
These quilts will be given to premature babies whilst in the
SCB Unit and taken home as a memento.
Please use 100% cotton fabric - any type of wadding is acceptable but do not add any
embellishments - buttons, bows, etc.
Size 16" x 20"
